The Gift of Knowledge

On a warm afternoon in Barr village, members of a Village Savings and Loan (VSL) group gathered beneath the shade of large trees at Gloria's home for their meeting. One by one they arrived, greeting each other with smiles and laughter before taking their seats in a circle on matts. It was more than a financial meeting . . . it was a gathering of friends whose lives had been transformed through learning to save, lend, and grow together.

As they began sharing their stories, it became clear that this group had not always enjoyed such success. Years ago, they had attempted to operate a savings group on their own, but without proper training they struggled. Records were poorly kept, money was difficult to divide fairly, and disagreements often arose. Like many savings groups, they were in danger of falling apart.

Everything changed when they received the right training. One of the members, Gloria, shared; "We were vulnerable and needed help. Thankfully the staff from EWT taught us the right way to manage our savings, keep records, and work together. They encouraged us every step of the way."

The difference has been remarkable."Before, we were squeezed by poverty," Ellen shared. "You would have just a little money and not know where to turn. Now our savings have helped us pay school fees, buy medicine, and meet the needs of our families. We also became like one family, so we are no longer afraid of the poverty we were facing."

Everlyn smiled as she described the transformation. "Before, we had many problems whenever we divided the money. The money wasn't kept well, and there was confusion. But now we have been trained well, and we followed exactly what we were taught. Now everyone has a testimony."

As the group completed its first full savings cycle, members divided their earnings and immediately put them to work. Some built or improved their homes. Others paid school fees, purchased seed for planting, or invested in their farms. Nearly every family had acquired new assets because of what they had saved together.

"The money we saved from January to December helped us so much," Gloria said. "Some people built houses. Others paid school fees or bought seeds. Now we have what we need for our gardens, and we have love instead of conflict.”

Their success quickly spread throughout the community. As neighbors watched families prosper and saw the unity within the group, many wanted to become part of it. "By December," Gloria said, "so many people wanted to join because they saw our group was different."

Ellen, now 60 years old, laughed as she reflected on what they had accomplished. "I had never seen such a large amount of money in my life. We didn't know these things before. Now we understand."

Then Alice shared a testimony that touched everyone gathered beneath the trees. "One of the biggest challenges in my life was debt," she said. "But now we know how to use money wisely and overcome debt."

As our afternoon together came to an end, it was obvious that this VSL group had gained far more than financial security. They had found knowledge that replaced confusion, unity that replaced conflict, and hope that replaced fear. Their meetings are no longer simply about saving money . . . they are about encouraging one another, solving problems together, and building stronger families and communities.

What began as practical training has become a powerful testimony that when people are equipped with knowledge, given the right tools, and encouraged to work together, lives can truly be transformed.
