God is Still Writing Stories of New Beginnings
Dear Friends,
Some occasions are so full of joy that they stay with you forever. That is exactly how I felt as I watched our most recent graduation for our tailoring girls.
Long before the ceremony began, families started arriving from villages all across Northern Uganda. Some had traveled for hours because there was no way they would miss this unforgettable day. They had come to celebrate their daughters, sisters, and friends who had overcome enormous obstacles and were stepping into a future they once thought was impossible.
Finally, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived. Joyful music filled the air as fifteen young women appeared in the distance, walking proudly in a procession, dressed in their caps and gowns.
I'll never forget how smiles spread across their faces as they entered the room and applause filled the air! For many, this was the first time they had ever been publicly recognized for an achievement, and for their families, it was a moment filled with overwhelming joy . . . a “Shout Out” that God is still writing stories of redemption and new beginnings!
The room echoed with songs of praise before the graduates began sharing their testimonies. One graduate shared: "I never thought I would experience a day like this! Before this year, we had all lost hope and had so many worries. But today we are different girls! Those simple words captured the heart of what had happened to them over the past year.
As I continued to listen to each girls share her testimony, I felt so much happiness inside, but the most powerful part of the ceremony was yet to come . . . hearing from the girls who had gone before them.
Susan was the first to share. She had lost both of her parents as one of thirteen children and once believed opportunities like this were meant for someone else. Today, she owns a successful tailoring business. She is paying school fees for children in her family, caring for an abandoned child who is excelling in school, and providing for needs she never imagined she could meet. Even more, she no longer sees herself as an orphan, but as a child of God!
Susan openly admits that the months after graduation were the hardest. Learning how to attract customers, price her work, purchase materials, and manage a business wasn't easy. But she wasn't left to figure it out alone.
Like every other EWT tailoring graduate, she received a brand-new sewing machine, fabric and supplies, and continued mentorship . . . as well as three months of shop rent to help her get started. Our tailoring instructor walks beside all of our graduates through those critical first months, helping them turn new skills into lasting livelihoods, and then continues to mentor in the years ahead.
That investment is bearing beautiful fruit. Again and again, graduates return with stories of businesses that are growing, families that are being supported, children who are back in school, and lives that have been transformed. Girls who once wondered how they would survive are now providing for others and becoming examples of hope and lights for Jesus throughout their communities.
As each graduate carries her sewing machine to her new shop, she is carrying far more than a piece of equipment. She is carrying renewed dignity, restored hope, and the confidence that comes from knowing she is deeply loved by God. While the practical skills she has learned will help provide for her family, the greatest gift she has received is discovering that her identity is not defined by poverty, rejection, or the hardships of her past. It is found in Jesus Christ, whose love is making all things new.
That is why our tailoring graduations are about so much more than completing a course. They are a beautiful reminder of what God can do when His love reaches a willing heart. He can restore hope where there had been despair, replace fear with confidence, and write new stories of redemption!
Thank you for being part of this ministry. Through your prayers and generosity, young women are not only learning a trade . . . they are encountering the transforming love of Jesus, becoming His disciples, and carrying His light into their families and communities.
To God be the glory!
