From Brokenhearted to New Life
Born into a family of seven children, Eunice faced hardship from the beginning. When she was young, her father suffered a devastating accident that affected his mind, leaving her mother struggling to provide for the family. Most days were spent digging in other people’s gardens just to earn enough food for them to survive.
There was no money for the children’s education, and the weight of poverty and hopelessness became almost unbearable. “There was a time when I lost hope and even tried to take my own life,” Eunice shared quietly. “I felt like I had no future and was worth nothing.”
But God had not forgotten her. When Eunice joined one of our discipleship groups, something began to change. Although she could not read or write, she heard about a Savior who loved her and had a purpose for her life. For the first time, hope began to replace despair.
Soon afterward, Eunice was selected for EWT’s one-year tailoring program. She remembers, “I came with fear. I didn’t even know how to touch a sewing machine, and learning was difficult. While other students quickly mastered new skills, I needed extra help. I’m so thankful our instructor, Jacob, never gave up on me. He explained everything again and again. He became more than a teacher—he became like a father to me.”
The tailoring program offered far more than vocational skills. Alongside sewing lessons, the students received daily encouragement, counseling, and biblical teaching. For Eunice, it was the first time she had experienced people who truly cared about her. “Here we have fathers, mothers, aunties, and uncles,” she said. “They teach us the things we never knew.” For the first time in her life, she also ate three meals a day.
Even more importantly, she discovered her worth. “I have peace now,” she said with a smile. “I have pride because I know I am someone in God’s eyes. I am who He says I am.”
When Eunice returned home during a break from the program, her family could hardly believe the transformation. The shy, discouraged young woman they once knew had become confident, joyful, and full of hope.
Today, that transformation continues. After graduating from the tailoring program, Eunice opened a tailoring shop with another graduate. What once seemed impossible has become reality. The young woman who once believed her life had no future now spends her days sewing clothes, serving customers, and earning an income with skills she never dreamed she could learn. She is already training six students, who call her “teacher” and look to her as their guide.
Looking back, Eunice gives all the glory to God. “God has loved me and given me so much,” she said. “One of my favorite verses is Psalm 34:18: ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.’ I know that promise is true because He has been close to me.” Then she smiled and added, “And He has done so much more than that—He has breathed new life in me!”
