Gerald’s parents separated when he was very young. After the separation, his mother initially took him with her, but she left him with his grandmother when he was five years old and has not returned since. As for his father, he remarried another woman as soon as the separation was complete, and the new wife wants nothing to do with Gerald.
He has continued to live with his grandmother, who is a poor farmer overwhelmed by her responsibilities. A few years back, Gerald’s father was involved in a nasty car accident that left him in critical condition, and it was Gerald’s grandmother who paid his medical bills. To do this, she had to sell off some of her animals and part of her farming land, leaving her with even fewer resources than before.
Gerald was supposed to be in P.5 when he enrolled at NISSI, but after being interviewed, the teachers advised that he should return to P.2 to strengthen his academic foundation. He was the tallest and oldest boy in his class, but that did not dampen his morale; instead, it motivated him to study even harder, and he went on to finish primary school at the top of his class.
When we asked Gerald’s grandmother what her plans were for her grandson now that he had completed primary school, she burst into tears. She told us that as much as she would love for Gerald to go to secondary school, she simply cannot afford to. After saving some money, she plans to enroll him in a 3-month practical apprenticeship. Gerald also struggles with asthma, adding to her concern for his future and his health.
